After closing OE 1.53 R6 normally the file openelement.exe stays running in the background in task manager in windows xp. Would that cause newer instances of OpenElement to crash? It might have done that in my case.

Hi,

On my Win8.1 it disappears from the task manager after closing. It may be a problem specific to your machine. (If anyone else have this issue please post here.) Try to restart Windows and see if it still happens. If nothign works, force-close the stuck OE instance manually in the Task Manager to avoid problems.
