Is there a  known problem using the element Email Form sending a form msg to AOL address? The recipient is not getting the message. I have checked the spelling and syntax of the email address.

Thx.

Hi,

It is not necessarily related to the Email Form itself, it may be related to the Sender address for example. You can try using SMTP if you have any useable SMTP server (in the past one could have used GMail, after a certain number of authorisations to click here and there, but now I don't know if it still works).

Demit OE,

Thanks for the quick reply and suggestion. Site is developed using OE 1.50 R4. However, i realize there are small variations in the url string components depending if the mail system is SMTP w or w/o security or SSL, mail, sendmail, or qmail. For the most part, they are similar with the simple inclusion or exclusion of correct parameters.

The logic to edit and compose the finished url? string should be successful by applying the technical requirements of the protocol and mail server in conjunction with editing to ensure correct parameters and string syntax. Given the fast growth of email variations in the past, I think the variations are vary much standardized by now.

I do not want to make a dependency on a mail server other than the hosting site server default. This OE website is hosted by FatCow. I have spent hours with them discussing and trying various methods and they are certain they have no contribution to the problem. They have no reports of problems sending email to AOL.

Sending email from OE to AOL using mail, sendmail, qmail or smtp w/o security does not arrive at the email destination - correct address no errors noted.

The OE support KB and community offer little possibly applicable sending email errors and nothing on AOL. I have attempted to use fatcow smtp service using all email protocol and security parameter combinations and the send is always unsuccessful connecting to the service with Error2, a catchall for timeout conditions.

I believe simple is best. Would you please consider using your resources to address the specific symptoms, that being successful receipt of msg for non AOL clients and no receipt of message for AOL client. Anything else you could suggest or do will be appreciated.

I will continue to search for symptoms and solutions at my end.

Thank you again.

DThomas

I suggest you to make SMTP working. First, try to configure an email client application to use SMTP of your provider (or anyone else). When it works and AOL receives your messages, use the same parameters in OE.

I don't know what can be possiblty changed for AOL, there's nothing special about messages. Try to find a simple PHP mail test script, create a .php file with it and upload with FileZilla + test. Code example:

<?php
var_dump(mail('address@aol.com', 'Test Mail', 'Test message'));
// you may need to add headers too, but try like this first

Have a nice day

I will follow your suggestion. If I find specifics or if SMTP works i will share with forum.

Many Thanks...

If the "manual" mail sends messages but nothing gets to AOL (while arriving to some other mailboxes), it is not related to OE but to your hosting configuration and/or sender address that should be.. ? something AOL accepts according to its dark internal reasons? ..

D,

Thx for the thoughts. I suspect it is the latter of your list, namely "something AOL accepts according to its dark internal reasons?"

However, until the actual problem is determined.... ?

I am kinda stub testing ( there's an old phrase - shows my years) anyway, i created a email acct in fatcow (my hosting provider) that will be the recipient. It is configured to forward any message rvcd to the AOL email adrs.

I used "mail" in the Email Form configuration to keep things simple for now. the message was received at the email addrs in fatcow but will have to wait until Monday when person is at office to check the AOL account.

I executed the same this time with and auto-response msg, I don not know where the respond msg will go since it is sent from the hosting service, I think.

FYI I tried to create a AOL acct to use for testing. I personally do not have texting capability on my cell phone - too much unwanted msgs and abuse. I can live w/o it.
The online dialog to create a AOL account asks for a cell phone number but does not explain why at first. I entered a land line number, submitted thte form and that is when it echoed someting the effect "a security code has be texted to your cell phone. It is needed to continue the registration"
It did not work, of course.

I called AOL support and was told the texting capable cell phone is mandatory to create a email account. Several times i called and spoke with different people. All, in as much, stated the same.
That means AOL does not see value in email accts for people that will not provide a texting cell phone number. I read the agreement and it implied contacting via provided means may happen. This suggests that AOL is an abuser of people's cell phone number for obvioius reasons.
Thought it interesting.

Do you manage to receive messages sent by OE's Send Email directly to this new email address at fatcow?

Posted By: dthomas
Date Posted: Jan 09 2016 at 11:43pm
D,

Yes. The msg was received from OE site to fatcow email address.

Monday i will hear from the customer re AOL account receipt of same msg that was forwarded from the fatcow account. I will let you know.

Thx,

i do not know if i provided the following, it may be helpful.

the AOL email address worked at the same website hosting svc at same atulocal1342.org url up to 12/31/15 in Front Page - 1/2/16 i implemented the OE version  by redirecting to /oe/ directory in atulocal1342.org.

FatCow is the hosting site for the website atulocal1342.org from which I am using an Open Element website development system. Specifically the Email Send form.

I successfully sent an email msg from my fatcow site email address administrator@atulocal1342.org to local1342@aol.com.

Just another piece of info to help solve.

Thx

Try to put  administrator@atulocal1342.org as Sender Address in the Send Email configuration.

You still didn't tell (or I didn't understand) whether you managed to receive the "OE" mail into any mailbox other than AOL (ex. the fatcow one).

regarding 1/9 suggestion to code php email code

i stopped coding over 20 years ago using cobol, assembler, c,  c++ - php was growing in mkt and i never got into it nor js. Do not really want to start coding again.

FatCow has examined the message source w/header of a email msg sent successfully to a non-aol address. They requested WESendMail-v29.php to examine and will send.  They said they were going to try examine trace, etc.

Update

When attempting to execute SMTP sendmail processes after send button click and receiving the error stating basically no connection i examined the WESendMailv-29.php file in the site server directory and there were concatenated strings of Notice: Warning: and Fatal error: messages of which the Fatal error message referred to attempt opening openElement.php and was unable to do so, implying it did not exist but it does. il or SendMail i do not know.

here is the contents of the file. it may make sense to you. IF you want the other files referenced, let me know.

If you called this script directly, those errors are normal, there are URL parameters missing (as well as POST data)

New info after analyzing log.

in file WESendMail-v29.php there are errors processing as follows:

The were two errors line 61

 failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /hermes/walnaweb04a/b265/moo.atulocal1342org/oe/WEFiles/Server/WESendMail-v29.php on line 61

and

Failed opening required '../../(var).php' (include_path='.:/usr/local/lib/php-5.3.29-amd64/lib/php') in /hermes/walnaweb04a/b265/moo.atulocal1342org/oe/WEFiles/Server/WESendMail-v29.php on line 61

I believe it is the require_once line.

//Chemin des donnéees de la page
$PageVarPhp = "../../".$PagePath."(var).php";

require_once $PageVarPhp;

The starting directory is redirected from the oringinal (actual Apache root) to /oe/. I do not know if this would affect the directory structure build in the code.

Same File. There were same 4 errors  one each lines 44, 45, 46 and 47

Notice: Undefined index: WESendMailID in /hermes/walnaweb04a/b265/moo.atulocal1342org/oe/WEFiles/Server/WESendMail-v29.php on line 44

These 4 may resolve when I correct the mail server url in the SMPT configuration.

Please let me know what you need from me to address this problem.

Thanks much...

One should not analyse WESendMail.php directly, it must be called from a website page, with URL parameters and POST data from user-filled fields.

If messages arrive to non-AOL mailboxes (do they?), it means that the script (WESendMail) works, no  need to analyse it. However, one can indeed analyse the message headers, because normally AOL filters by that + by the message origin (server that sends the message).

ON 1/12/16 i posted the following and it isn't there so i am re-posting.
It is informational at the least and probably something that may help point to a php code error?

The file still exists named "Contact(var).php" that it was looking for at the time the error message was generated.

Dmit OE,

My apologies. In my haste i overlooked your response to the prior post i though was missing,
Mea Culpa.

Your response is helpful. I understand about analyzing a php file in that it is different during execution as variable values are determined and the logic is based  upon those values.

The AOL email recipient does not receive the msg nor is it in her junk or spam folder.

The error information i provided was generated by my hosting system (fatcow) during the attempt to send and smtp msg using the Email Form element. What i provided is not how the file data actually looked. To eliminate the possibility of me misreading the log i have pasted it below delimited by my added line of ============.

I examined the php file to ascertain what the line 61 and prior code looked like. Hence, i suggested and provided the following from WESendMailv-29.php file. I remain suspicious of the syntax to build the directory and file name or there is a problem with the fact that the website is a subordinate directory to the root in the Apache server in which the url atulocal1342.org is redirected to the subordinate directory /oe/. Unlikely the var $PagePath was not built via system retrieve request. However, because this code is used in thousands of sites i fail to see any error. I have to depend upon you and fatcow support to help. AOL support is indifferent and not helpful. I have ascertained as best i could that teh ip address of the sending email svc reuptatin with AOL is GOOD and not blacklisted.

Hope this helps...

DThoms

Email sent to non AOL recipients is received ok. I get no reply to msg.

Ponder this:

This website i am using email form to send the failed msg was Front Page prior 2016 and the email to the same AOL account worked (from the same hosting service).

Why would it not work when developed in OE hosted on  the same server in the same website? Being able to identify any possible reasons will  help tremendously.

I wrote you half-way two days ago but forgot to finish and send.

1) The difference may be caused by message headers. openElement uses well-known php-mailer script to send messages, which (correctly) creates headers that ar edifferent from what your Frontpage site could have generated. AOL may have problems with it for some reason.

2) Try a simple test script to send mails, if your hosting supports PHP mail() function without need to send via SMTP. Create in the Notepad a file "testmail.php" with the code like below and see if one or two messages arrive.:

TEST MAIL START<br>
<?php
error_reporting(E_ALL);
echo 'PHP start<br>';
$message = "Test message to AOL";
$r = mail('YOUR_AOL_ADDRESS', 'Test Mail AOL', $message);
echo "Mail result: ".(($r===false)?'Erreur':$r)." <br>";

echo "Another message with some headers:<br>";
    $headers = 'From: YOUR_FATCOW_SENDER_ADDRESS' . "\r\n" .
               'Reply-To: ' . "\r\n" .
               'X-Mailer: PHP/' . phpversion();
    $r = mail('YOUR_AOL_ADDRESS', 'Test AOL Mail 2 (headers)', $message, $headers);
    echo "Mail2 result: ".(($r===false)?'Erreur':$r)." <br>";
}
echo 'PHP end<br>';
?>
TEST MAIL END<br>

Thank you Dmit OE.

I will try and let you know.

I noticed that emails sent from  FatCow hosting my domain atulocal1342.org have headers, however the From: in the header of the received msg is the sending email address. This was noticed when i sent the email msg to a gmail account that forwarded it to the aol acct. The recipient when forwarding the msg to me noticed the to; email adrs was her adrs/ the to: email adrs.

I do not know if this is the phpmailer or fatcow.  fatcow is not very responsive helping to resolve this issue. I provided header info and ip address to postmaster at aol and am waiting for reply.

Just some observations and info. Somehow i think the solution will be so simple...

Many thanks....

I don't understand. The "From" header IS the sending email address (fatcow mailbox in your case), so it is correct.

Posted By: dthomas
Date Posted: Jan 26 2016 at 2:25am
I added reqd info and used provided code. inserted it in the header code block area.
rcvd 500 error when loading. ask  fatcow to check svr logs.

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

ALSO, i remain confused about the From: email adrs. Ideally i want it to be the value of a form text field as noted when configuring the Email Form element - after i get it to work with aol.

Consider, when any other user in browsing the website and completes the Contact form there is no association with any fatcow email address that i am aware of. The user is not logged into fatcow neither am i when testing. I will ask fatcow spt what if any is the default From: email adrs.

Thx.

It wasn't to be put into an OE page. If you want to do so, put the code into a Code Block type HTML (!) positoin StartDocument(!), and add the folloing line at the end:

 <?php exit(); ?>

Concerning From: there's a way to use addresses provided by visitors, but 1) technically it's the server that sends the message, not the user him/herself; 2) the reason to put a fixed address is to please the recipient mailbox (AOL for example) as they will just destroy messages with ceretains From addresses without warning.

Dmit OE,

Thx very much.

I did  put the code in a code block at the beginning of the OE page. I didn't explain well.

Fatcow modified code (see below)  the first send mail attempt without headers was successfully received by the AOL recipient. No indication as to what happened with the second send mail with headers.

I continue to wait for error log/trace info from my request from FatCow.

I will place the php exit code as instructed and let you know.  Post fatcow response: apparently not necessary now.

I understand why it may not be ideal to place variable email addrs in the header as you explained. I will discuss the real need/desire of this with my client. I expect since the user is able to provide a email adrs in the form and pass it on as part of the msg it will be fine with a fixed adrs in the header.

Just revd fatcow response: stated syntax error line 31 which points to the page code as follows:

Line 31 seems to be the first of provided code as i used it.

TEST MAIL START<br>

<?php

error_reporting(E_ALL);

echo 'PHP start<br>';

$message = "Test message to AOL wo headers";

$r = mail('local1342@aol.com', 'Test Mail AOL no header', $message);

echo "Mail result: ".(($r===false)?'Error':$r)." <br>";

echo "Another message to AOL with headers:<br>";

    $headers = 'From: daniel.546@gmail.com' . "\r\n" .

               'Reply-To: ' . "\r\n" .

               'X-Mailer: PHP/' . phpversion();

    $r = mail('local1342@aol.com', 'Test AOL Mail 2 (headers)', $message, $headers);

    echo "Mail2 result: ".(($r===false)?'Error':$r)." <br>";

}

echo 'PHP end<br>';

?>

TEST MAIL END<br>

Does not make sense to me but i reran the page an it indicated no error. need to wait until tomorrow to see if AOL recipient got one or both ok.

Print of page output related to code:

TEST MAIL START
PHP start
Mail result: 1
Another message to AOL with headers:
Mail2 result: 1
PHP end
TEST MAIL END

Many thanks...  (will report results tomorrow)

Regading the hosting site default email adrs.

fatcow states there is no default email address for the site/URL but did point out that and email adrs could be put in the code.

I still think you've put it to the wrong place or to the wrong type of Code Block (PHP for example). TEST lines should not be preceded by echo as they are not inside <?php ... ?> blocks, they are plain HTML, which is the reason why the Code Block type should NOT be PHP. Could you please go into your Code Block and verify it's "Position" and "Type"?

P.S. If mesage without headers is received by AOL and message with headers is not, it confirms my idea that AOL filters message by headers in its own way. In the worst case, you can just use Send Form element instead of Send Mail and process the user data yourself, sending them like this test script does, without headers that are blocked.You can find examples on the Web. (Data are written into $_POST, ex. $_POST['email'] is what the user entered into the field having "Name attribute" property set to "email" in OE.

Sorry for numerous replyposts.  Just got msg from fatcow and the syntax i asked they tell me is identified in their respnonse:
I have checked the CGI error logs at https://www.fatcow.com/controlpanel/cgiManagement/cgiErrorLog.bml and there was following issue with your script:
20160126T120426: atulocal1342.org/ContactX.php
PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '}' in /oe/ContactX.php on line 44

Following is the file ContactX.php they modified per above error and i ran and got the return email in prior post.

Hope you can make sense of this, i do not understand the nuances of the send protocol to figure it out.

Thanks

DThomas

Sorry again, here is the ContactX.php file referenced in the prior post.

The first error fatcow told me about that they fixed was on line 31, now they say line 44. Might be from logs from different executions of code?

Sorry again.
The word  error starting in the first column was my notation, it is not in the original file.

my apologies,

Yes it seems there was }left from modifying the code after I've copied it from my test script.

The AOL error is rather weird, "recipient rejected" on a strange address.. I wonder if fatcow have some ideas about this report. Then if you say that even the mail without headers didn't pass (is it sure? no message arrived to the AOL mailbox?), it means you must try ti use SMTP, or change the recipient address (or you can set up redirection - use another mailbox, like GMail, then redirect to send the mail onward to AOL, it may be the simplest solution.

Very weird, all that has been happening.  Fatcow is passing issue to a Administrator Specialist.?
Email w/o headers did pass until AOL started the return with error.  I originally used smtp and there was a connection error so i tried Mail thinking simpler. The recipient address has been used for two decades. Why now? Right?  I did test a forwarding with Gmail and it worked ok. However, as in Mail that did work once w/o headers the From: in the header is set to the recipient's email address. Does not make sense.

AOL postmaster went silent after is sent headers from several attempts.

We all seem to be at a loss. PhpMailer has been working for a long time. Fatcow is a reputable service. OE has been using its Emal Form for a long time. AOL has been in existence for a long time. No history with any one of problems with any component. Variable symptoms and inconsistent interpreted logs from Fatcow, ie error reported on different linesby different technicians. Serveral unsuccessful attempts using simple php code.

Nothing seems to produce a trail to isolate the problem.  No knowledge of what if any system changes at atulocal1342.org hosting environment may have taken place.

Given all the above i spoke with customer and she is satisfied with the simple mailto: link. It works.

I will keep seeking solution and share new info and ideas. Anything you can think of may help.

Thanks much...

DThomas

I'd suggest changing the mailbox or redirection, and if necessary taking the risk of using the OE feature of assigning a field's value to the "From" header. You can assign the property Name attribute to "email" (for example) for the corresponding field element, then in the Send Mail configuration enter "email" (without "") into the Sender field, as suggestedby the comment below the field. This will set whatever user enters as the From address.

I was writing a explanation and summation of the original problems (2) that remain unaddressed and we all are spinning of new problems the result of testing with uncertainty of what may be or actually is causing the original errors.

The solution, i my humble opinion, is dependent upon FatCow examine error logs and system traces (if coordinated and activated) and this effort is severely lacking.

The focus is not there. My customer has decided to accept just a mailto: and not depend upon a form for email.

Feel free to close as not solved.

Thanks much. IF something comes up that is definitive i will inform all. Otherwise, thanks again.

Sorry for not responding sooner i have been busy and the work around of not using the email form element was satisfactory to the customer. I do not have good support from AOL (they stopped responding after providing them the header data they requested) and the hosting service has too many techs taking a shot at the current symptoms w/o continuity of prior efforts. I am overwhelmed. Have to let it go until i have time or the urgency surfaces.

I appreciate everyone's help especially Dmit OE, lots of insight and effort.  I love the OE product and will  continue with it.

Thanks again...

I suggest you manage to get rid of dinosaurs like AOL, that got fat in the past and keep linig on their past notority while providing less than mediocre service, compared to new younger providers.I know it depends on your client as well but, in the worst case, persuade him/her to create a usual GMail account and redirect mails to AOL address, if it's really indispensable.

Dmit OE,

I agree. I am very appreciative of everyone's help from OE support and developers.

I suggest you to make SMTP working. First, try to configure an email client application to use SMTP of your provider (or anyone else). When it works and AOL receives your messages, use the same parameters in OE.

everyone's contribution is appreciated. however, my past experience with this particular problem demanded and inordinate amount of effort. In retrospect, i now believe smtp mail() request with the suite of platform, mail, OS components will work but am unable to get the most simple info as to how to configure the mail() utility parameter values needed for the hosting platform. So, it remains unsolved and the black mark is awarded to my FAT COW hosting service provider.

Thx again all,.

One just needs to find a well-working SMTP server somewhere (which may not always be easy) and configure SMTP in Preferences->Publishing->Configuration.
